Travel to Kerch

Tourism is not the forte of the city, because of the former Soviet industrial concept. In a way, this is an advantage, as hotels are cheap. Yet, the situation changes. Despite the lack of beaches in town's area, there are a lot of them at distance of 20 minute travel by bus or taxi.
Travel to Kerch is either by road, rail or ferry. There are direct trains running to Kerch from Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities. It is about four hours by car or bus from Simferopol (airport / train station). There are numerous bus services to/from Kerch, including the bus line to Russia over the Strait of Kerch by ferry.

Kerch is the most eastern city of the Crimean Peninsula. It is magnificently located. Standing on the Mount Mitridates is similar to overlooking Athens from Akropolis. The view from the mountain is really worth seeing. One can see the vast expanses of the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. On a clear day the Russian territory is visible. There's a feeling that the Orient starts right beyond the Straight of Kerch. Kerch is one of the most ancient cities of Ukraine. The city is scattered along the straight and decorated by small islands.
Kerch was founded in 7th century BC by the Greek colonists from Miletus. They called the city-state Panticapaeum. The city was built on the top of the Mount Mitridates.
The city was consequently controlled by Byzantine Empire, the Turkic Khazars, Kievan Rus, the Republic of Genoa, the Ottoman Empire and raided by Zaporizhian Cossacks.
